One of the issues that RIDL has had with the DUI environment is the proliferation of attorneys who will take exhorbitant fees from unsuspecting DUI arrestees and claim they are "experts" at DUI defense, then all they do is spend 15 minutes obtaining a plea bargain that the arrestee would likely have been able to get on their own without an attorney. This practice has victimized millions of people, some of whom may have actually been found innocent had their attorney done the right thing and properly defended them.

We have come to learn that DUI defense is a highly specialized law practice and training is needed for an attorney to properly defend a DUI arrestee. The National College Of DUI Defense (NCDD) provides that training. We have come to know many of the attorneys who have been trained through the NCDD and found them to be passionate individuals who really care about providing a quality defense. They leave no stone unturned. As such, we have decided to offer an attorney's page listing attorneys in your state that are certified through the NCDD. These are the only attorneys that we currently feel comfortable recommending. Of course, there are no guarantees in the outcome of any DUI case, so RIDL is not responsible for the outcome of your case should you choose one of these attorneys. What we can assure you of, is that should you hire one of these attorneys you will have someone who really cares about you and your case and will work very hard to defend you.

Each July since it's inception, the College has held an intensive 3-day training session at Harvard Law School. The emphasis is on science, particularly forensic toxicology (blood/breath alcohol analysis), and many renowned scientists and physicians from around the world have accepted our invitations to lecture. Two other 2- or 3-day national seminars are currently held annually as well, one in conjunction with the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

In July, 2004, the American Bar Association voted to recognize a new speciality in American law: DUI Defense. At the same time, the ABA Executive Committee voted to authorize the National College for DUI Defense as the sole certifying body -- that is, to conduct all investigations, examinations, grading, and bestowing of Board certification. In essence, this was an official recognition of something the College has been doing on its own for about four years now.

The College is entirely non-profit, self-supporting and prohibits the use of its facilities or email forum for marketing. In fact, every year it turns away applicants to the Summer Session at Harvard once enrollment has reached 90 attorneys to keep the faculty-student ratio low (there will typically be 20-25 speakers, for a mximum 5-to-1 ratio); it is always sold out months in advance.
